Space Combat: The Game

It's here! After countless emails from Space Combat screensaver users, the dream has finally become a reality. Space Combat has been made into an interactive game! With my permission, Garrad has added onto Space Combat so that players can now take part in the battle. You can now control any of the seven space ships, and fight to rule your computer monitor. It's exactly like the screensaver, only now you're in it.

A really big thank you goes to Garrad for converting Space Combat into an interactive game. He's done a great job. You can email him at its@ihug.com.au

Space Combat: The Screensaver

Space Combat is an exciting, complex, and entertaining screen saver. First, your screen is all black; then, a space ship flies across it. Then another. And suddenly a war breaks out! Missiles are let loose and lasers fired. Pieces fly as the ships swarm around each other in complex AI formations. It is an ever-changing space battle that can entertain you for hours.

An exact description

Space Combat is a screen saver that is designed to be entertaining but still save your screen. It is probably best suited for people that like action games. It is basically lots of space ships that fly across your screen fighting. When one goes off your screen it wraps around to the other side, so every ship is destroyed eventually. Each ship has it's own artificial intelligence, so it knows what kind of ships it wants to fight and has it's own attack patterns and weapons to do that with. Ships of the same type cannot attack each other. That way they can sometimes get a group together and start taking out the rest of the ships. Different ships will seem to be ahead at different times. I worked extra hard to give the screen saver a variety of different exciting moments, but made sure that no ship could ever stay in the lead forever.

To see a very small vitalize preview I put together using two ships, check out the title at the top of this page . The actual screen saver is better quality but it gives you some idea of what it looks like in action.

After you have downloaded Space Combat, unzip it and open the readme file. It gives instructions on how to install the screen saver.

About the ships

This section is for you to learn about the different ships and how they behave. Once you've watched Space Combat for a while you may want to find out exactly what the ships do. If you have watched it for a long time you may have already figured out some of this. If you have not downloaded Space Combat yet, this will show you a little more of what this screen saver is like and how much work was put into it.

Humming Bird

Humming Bird

The Humming Bird is the weakest of all the ships. Its armor is little better then aluminum foil but it makes up for this in speed. It is the fastest ship and has a spike attached to the front, which is used for poking its enemies. It can inflict some serious damage with its spike; however it gets hurt each time it uses it. To counter this problem it has an auto repairing devise so that it's shield will slowly recharge.
Missile Ship

Missile Ship

Missile ships are large and have a lot of shield. Their main enemy is the Bumblebee, but they will sometimes shoot other ships too. They are slow and hard to maneuver. Their primary missiles are not guided, so they often have trouble hitting their target. In a group these ships can rule the screen.
Bumblebee

Bumblebee

Bumblebees are very maneuverable fighters. You'll sometimes see them flying circles around a Missile Ship not getting hit by a single missile. As well as attacking Missile Ships they will also use their lazers to fight Humming Birds which they are extremely talented at.
Helium Tank

Helium Tank

This is a small ship that can shoot missiles at an alarming rate. Their primary missles are large and are guided but are slow and do little damig to their enemies. Their secondary weapon is another missile which deals more damage; however, it is unguided and has trouble hitting anything but the slowest moving targets.
Tanker

Tanker

This is one big ship. It has much more shield than any other ship and shoots a weapon of yellow homing destruction. Just wait till you see its secondary weapon.
Fixer Bot

Fixer Bot

Fixer Bots do exactly what their name implies, fix. They will drive up to either a Tanker or a Missile Ship, stop, and start repairing its damage. Even though Humming Birds are the only ones who will purposely attack a Fixer Bot, Fixer Bots still have a hard life. Many times ships don't stop shooting at their foes while they're being fixed; which can put a Fixer Bot right in the thick of battle.
Red Fighter

Red Fighter

One of the only ships that uses its primary and secondary weapons almost simultaneously, Red Fighters can deal a very large amount of damage in a very short amount of time. They clean out the Tankers when they get too thick and will also fight Bumblebees and occasionally Missile Ships.
Al the Astronaut

Al the Astronaut

Al is an alien astronaut that is seen floating across the galaxy. He is seen very rarely and when he leaves the screen he does not wrap to the other side. He is very friendly but also carries a weapon of his own and uses it regularly. Just how much damage this weapon does is only known by those who are diligent watchers of Space Combat and are lucky enough to see Al floating by.
